Adolf Loos

Architect

Although Adolf Loos did not consider himself an architect, his views and buildings significantly influenced a generation of his contemporaries and followers, architects and generally culturally educated men and women. With his attitudes and work, he placed himself in the pre-war "other Austria", a free-spirited alternative to the social classes loyal to the Habsburg throne, which were firmly on conservative positions. His close friends from literary, philosophical and artistic circles included the writers Karl Kraus and Peter Altenberg, the painter and graphic artist Oskar Kokoschka, the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein and many others. The culture of the “other Austria” was able to fully develop after the First World War in the more tolerant environment of the Austrian Republic and post-war Vienna, although even here the eternal fighter Loos found enough stimuli for sharp criticism. However, the foundations for a spiritual space open to discussion and the free exchange of ideas were laid at the turn of the century, and Loos was one of its creators.
