Take a peek behind the scenes!

Without our specialist departments’ hard work there wouldn’t be a museum.
And Grifo might be serving burgers at a certain fast-food joint next door.

What we’re working on

Archaeology: probing Prague’s prehistory

We dig Prague’s past – in every sense of the word. The oldest parts of our collections were found by Břetislav Jelínek and Josef Antonín Jíra. Our museum is now the place where all archaeological finds from across the city end up. So it’s up to us to devise a methodology for what to do with all that pottery.

History: from flint tools to the metro

History is our museum’s life-blood. We document collections and explore Prague’s history, from flint tools (which we dig up) to the metro (which we leave in the ground, obviously). And we write papers, put on exhibitions, give talks and answer researchers’ questions.

Nature: even a concrete jungle can be full of wildlife

We’re exploring Prague to find its most unexpected inhabitants, including mouflon and other horned beasts. We launched this new project to raise awareness about nature in the city in 2025, partnering with various expert institutions. And you too can help us track biodiversity in the cityscape.

Digitalisation: for your eyes also

We turn physical objects into zeroes and ones. This means that the treasures in our cupboards and drawers can be displayed on your screens. And that something will remain of them even when they’ve all crumbled into dust. Because everything will crumble into dust one day, including us and you. C’est la vie…

Caring for our collections: 4 million children

We take care of 4 million objects in thirty repositories, where we tweak the controls to provide the optimal micro-climate for their safekeeping. By law, every 20 years we have to measure and weigh every object, give it a cuddle and ask it how it feels, before putting it to bed again and tucking it in. It’s the best job!

Restoration and conservation: saving yesterday for tomorrow

Half artist, half scientist, our conservators make sure the objects in our collections will survive for centuries. If anyone is still around after whatever comes next, they’ll have a link to humanity’s past. Working with curators, historians and other experts, they’re already training the next generation to pick up the magnifying glass.
